A new year is the time many think about new things they want to start, so why not begin now by embracing change, growth, and most importantly, you—the authentic you.
Traditionally, growth is sold to us as a series of tick boxes, easily defined and measurable changes that we can merrily complete and track. How many planners and help books are scattered on your shelves gathering dust? While it can look like this in some parts, deep-level growth and development aren't that simple. When change is implemented beyond our comfort zones, it becomes messy. No longer a linear path, it transforms into a series of ups and downs with underlying growth. It might not feel like growth the whole way through—the dips can be depressing—but gradual progress is what matters. To do the deeper work, we have to sail on a much less predictable sea.
When I started being coached, I loved the first few sessions; my progress felt miraculous. My 3-month goals I achieved in 2 weeks, which was insane. But then the proper work and struggle began. There came a session when I admitted I felt like I was failing. Between sessions, I had started to stall. My fight with myself began: I was less consistent, disappointed in myself, and frustrated. My amazing coach then pointed out, “Look how far you have come, and look what this is showing us. Your inner voice is now the next thing we need to work on.”
Truthfully, I had implemented so much, and the fact I wasn’t doing it daily wasn’t the problem—my inner critic was.
To Embrace Feral Growth in 2025, I Am Going To:
1. Lean Into Discomfort
Growth happens outside of our comfort zones. Instead of avoiding challenges, I’m choosing to face them head-on and see what they teach me. Situations that come up, such as my step to share my new venture with Feral Growth with my friends and work, can feel scary. That’s because self-advocating is not something I am used to. The response of support and admiration far outweighs the discomfort I had posting and sharing. Discomfort just means it’s new, it’s change.
2. Prioritize Self-Awareness
For a long time, I couldn’t face myself. I had a version of me that I presented to society and then the true me, hidden underneath. My actual wants, needs, and desires were pushed away because I didn’t think they were acceptable, possible, or something others could accept. Now, they are a priority.
Here are ways I stay self-aware, and how you can too:
Journaling: Write down how you feel about the day, what you’ve learned, and any reflections. One prompt I love is, “I remember a time when... I am so grateful I now...” This allows you to see how far you’ve come.
Reflection: This doesn’t have to look like meditation or baths (though it can). It might be dancing in your living room to your favorite song, walking along a river, or even a quiet drive. Reflection is not a time to criticize yourself; it’s a time to look for lessons, gratitude, and growth. Allow reflection to show you what’s working and what needs letting go. Don’t be afraid to release what no longer serves you.
3. Let Go of Perfectionism
Just because you don’t do it every day doesn’t mean you’re failing. Read that again. Remind yourself of that. You didn’t give up; you just had a moment.
There will never be a perfect moment, time, feeling, or situation. There are just moments where you make a choice. You make it perfect by choosing it. Don’t let the lack of perfection stop you—do it anyway. You’ll learn, grow, and experience progress, even if it’s messy.
4. Honor Your Unique Path
It’s okay to not be doing what everyone else is doing. Every one of us is made up of a billion experiences, and we all perceive situations differently. This means we all walk our own individual paths. Instead of fighting it, embrace it. Love yourself for it. Yes, parts of the road may feel lonely, but the joy outweighs it. Remember, your authenticity is your strength.
How to Get Started
Step 1: Identify areas in your life that feel stuck or uninspired. List 1-3 that come to mind.
Step 2: Set wild goals—not the safe ones no one will question, but the big ones that align with your authentic self. A million pounds is not unrealistic if it aligns with your true ambitions!
Step 3: Build habits that align with your goals while allowing room for failure. It’s not about doing it every day; it’s about restarting every time.
Step 4: Track your progress through introspection. Ask yourself: How are you feeling? Is this bettering your life and self-vision?
Surround Yourself With Like-Minded People
There are more people on similar journeys than you think. Once you realize you’re not alone, the steps feel much more freeing. Reddit, Instagram, networking groups, and followers can provide much-needed inspiration and support. Look for communities that uplift and challenge you to grow.
Remember:
There is no one-size-fits-all plan to bettering your life or self-worth. Embrace your journey—the untamed, chaotic, and authentic path of feral growth.
